Anyone who knows me can’t figure out why I like Anaconda – they’re always surprised when I say not only do I like it, I own a copy. It’s fun to watch (at least I think it is!) and big time tongue in cheek. I watch it once a year at Halloween or when we have a cheesy horror movie night – it never fails to disappoint in the laughing department. Jennifer Lopez is good in it and the cast are actually pretty talented for an adventure horror- Eric Stoltz (who does a cash grab – being stung by a wasp in the first 15 minutes and being unconscious for almost the whole movie) Jon Voight, Ice Cube, Owen Wilson, Danny Trejo, the cgi anaconda…..etc.
Anaconda does fulfill every box on the adventure horror checklist. I read that’s it’s now considered a cult classic – who would have thought?! Jennifer Lopez was on her way to becoming a pretty good actor. U-turn and Out of Sight were really good movies and I loved The Cell. You can almost see where she went from Jennifer Lopez to J-lo – and mega stardom. I haven’t watched many of her movies since then – it just seems like she made more and more generic choices. I picked Jennifer Lopez and Anaconda for day 11 of women in horror because J-lo kicks the anaconda’s ass and plays a smart, strong and resourceful woman in this very entertaining creature feature!
